Old City work and additional coach plans move back into focus
Hyderabad Metro’s next phase has moved back into focus after the Telangana government directed officials to speed up work on the Old City corridor and take steps to add more coaches to the existing network.
At a review meeting in August 2026, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy asked Hyderabad Metro Rail officials to accelerate work connected with the 7.5-km MGBS-Chandrayangutta stretch. The government also wants additional Metro coaches to help handle increasing passenger demand.
For Hyderabad commuters, these are two separate but closely connected developments: increasing capacity on the Metro that already operates today, and pushing forward the city’s longer-term Phase II expansion.
What is the latest Hyderabad Metro Phase II update?
The immediate focus is the proposed 7.5-km Metro corridor between Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) and Chandrayangutta.
During the August review, the Chief Minister directed officials to complete road-widening work along the corridor more quickly and initiate the tender process for Metro construction. Officials were also asked to address pending land acquisition and finalise Metro expansion plans.
The government has additionally asked officials to consult Delhi Metro regarding the appropriate technology for the MGBS-Chandrayangutta corridor.

The Old City has been central to Hyderabad Metro expansion discussions for years. The proposed MGBS-Chandrayangutta section would extend Metro connectivity southwards from the existing network and forms part of the broader effort to improve public transport access through the Old City.
